So I’m kind of back into watches again (I go through phases, it’s been a good year or so since the last phase though).
I figured it was kind of time that gold watches came back into fashion again (or are they already? I never bother to keep up). Anyway, after I click the publish button on this post I figure the demand for gold watches is pretty much going to go through the roof (and when I say roof I don’t mean a normal roof, I mean a high one, like in those Victorian terraced houses with gardens round the back) so I’m doing my best to secure the entire world’s stock of gold watches which I will drip-feed to the market at horrendous prices and emerge the other side a glorious trillionaire playboy, the sort who doesn’t spend long minutes poring over every last detail of the steak menu before ordering pork schnitzel at half the price, wears shoes made out of real leather and has one of those double-door refrigerators dispensing strawberry yoghurt at the front. God knows I’d probably go ahead and BUY Big Bamboo, then turn up all Bruce-Waynesque in my Hyundai Coupe, a beautiful young filly on my arm and walk into the full bar “but it’s full” she’d say, “you’ll never get a table at this time”. “Oh, I don’t think we need to worry”, I’d say, “I OWN the place” and then with a click of my fingers.. oh yes, gold watches, err… so far I’ve got five, well, four and a half.
Here’s what I’ve got so far:
Seagull gold / silver watch – the choice combination of stainless steel and gold make this the perfect choice when browsing expensive gentlemen’s magazines
Shanghai gold watch (yellow face) – the combination of the yellow dial with gold strap and casing making this the best choice when writing correspondence with the aristocracy
Shanghai gold Watch (gold face) – Gold dial, gold strap, gold case, gold hands, everything about this watch is gold, which makes it the perfect choice when making expensive transactions
Jellymon Shanghai Watch – double BLING!!!
Actually I’m not really a big fan of this watch, ok it’s gold but I don’t really like the dial (despite the huge original Shanghai logo in the middle). The interesting thing is the history of the watch. Only 100 of these were made (actually 100 each of the 4 designs) and they were the last watches which were made at the Shanghai watch factory before they went bankrupt. It’s either a shrewd investment (I’ll probably never wear it, just keep it in the original box) or I just threw away 1000rmb, ask me in 10 years.
Casio Databank 610AG
This is the business right here, I think everyone either owned one of these watches or had a friend who did back in the mid 80’s. Except they were in genuine black plastic, not gold (they look seriously awesome in gold)! Someone seems to have started making these again, it’s marked “Made in Thailand” and everything seems brand new, Casio seem to have a plant in Thailand so maybe they shipped the old tooling out there?
There’s quite a few of these retro Casio watches on the market and I wasn’t sure which one to go for initially. H found some contacts on Taobao that were selling very cheaply and she gave them a call explaining that I wasn’t sure whether to go for this model or just the plain old Casio digital watch (in gold of course), “well, what is your boyfriend looking for, what functions does he need?”. “errr he just wants to know which is the coolest”……..silence………”the 610 has a lot more functions, like a calculator and telephone numbers and..” “he doesn’t care about that, he just wants to look cool”…silence again as he tried to figure out what kind of freaks he was dealing with here, in the end I went for the 610 because as well as looking awesome I can do sums on the go and store UP TO 20 TELEPHONE NUMBERS!! GET IN!!!! (actually I have no idea how many it stores, it might be even more, although why anyone would need to store more than 20 numbers totally escapes me). I’m currently desperately trying to stop myself from buying the other one too but I think about it like 50 times a day.
Ah, I should mention that I’ve been trying to recruit others into my campaign, I’ve met with limited success though, Nick’s the only convertee so far, I tried to convince Swiss James but he came up with the lame excuse that he’s “tried really hard to find one but my campaign has already been so successful that there’s none left on the market”, GET IT SORTED SWISS!!! I haven’t started on Woai yet…
Young Nick virtually shrieking with delight about his new gold Shanghai watch (which isn’t as cool as mine).

haha, i DID own one of those casios, but not in smelly plastic…had some serious stainless steel plating going down. admittedly, not gold – but i like to slum it sometimes
The Casio reeks of Devon from Knight Rider. Great set of classic timepieces.
Ah, well spotted ChrisB, yes, I do bear more than a passing resemblance to Devon as well, I mean in terms of personality etc, I’m far more handsome than him.
I bought one of those calculator watches in Tokyo, 2007. In gold too, solid 29 karat cold.
As usual I was a little ahead of the game, but perhaps now that the hoi polloi have caught up, I’ll start wearing it to Polo matches and the like again
Just 29 karat eh? mine is 41.5 carat and the calculator buttons are made out of solid ebony encrusted with diamonds.
What’s more, at the price I paid I’m almost certain that people must have been exploited somewhere
I should jolly well hope so!
Sorry – i’m just not getting it! Why this urge to wear cuffy watches? Is it the Italian side coming out?
That’s it, you’re all getting gold watches for christmas!
Ooooh, I really like the first one. It looks a lot like a watch from Citizen that my dad had when I was a child. I want to get one. Do you think it would look nice on my arm, although I’m a girl?
Sara I’ll sell you one for 7000 euros, please send cash (in used, unmarked bills).
I guess it depends on how thin your wrists are really, you might struggle to shrink the strap enough if they’re very thin!
