Being Chinese, one of H’s top priorities on her visit to the UK was to make a pilgrimage to a Louis Vitton shop to drool over the ridiculously priced bags.
So, when we made a shopping trip to Manchester (after establishing the lack of prestige shopping outlets in Stoke on Trent) we stopped by at the new Selfridges in the town centre to take a look at their store.
We’d already had much discussion on the subject and H was surprised by my claim not to know any English girl who owned or was interested in bags by Louis Vitton or Gucci (well, maybe a slight interest but I don’t know any who’d spend upwards of a 1000 quid on a bag), my theory was that it’s mainly Asian girls who are interested in this kind of thing. Of course H disagreed and reckoned that girls everywhere were into Louis Vitton.
Sure enough, we arrived at the Louis Vitton store at Selfridges to see the largest concentration of Chinese people I’ve seen since my arrival in the UK, I’m guessing 60-70% of the people in store were Chinese. Not only that but Louis Vitton had a Chinese member of staff dedicated to dealing with all the Chinese customers. He was rushing around speaking Putonghua to them all, couldn’t make out what he was saying but presumably something along the lines of “No, the prices are fixed” “no madam I cannot give you a free purse with that bag” “no, we don’t have any damaged stock at cheaper prices” etc
Anyway, Dingle – 1, H - 0
